Wimbledon Embraces Video Challenge Technology in 2025.

Wimbledon tennis court with video review technology

Wimbledon will follow the US and Australian Opens in utilizing replay systems.

Video review systems are set to arrive at The Championships in the upcoming tournament.

Competitors are granted the right to challenge specific calls made by the official, following the system already in place at each of the American Grand Slam and the Australian Open.

This innovation is slated for use on Centre Court and Court One for the duration of the Championships and on the remaining featured courts when they are hosting singles contests.

This step comes just a year after the AELTC introduced electronic line calling, which terminated the 147-year role of line judges.

Reviewable Decisions

Competitors will not be permitted to challenge the accuracy of the ELC system, but they can request the umpire to review specific situations, including:

  • If a ball has bounced twice.
  • Whether a ball touched an rival's racket or person on the way past.
  • Possible hindrance at the conclusion of a rally.

Notably, there will be no limit on the number of challenges a competitor can request.

Case in Point

A recent example took place in Indian Wells recently, where Daniil Medvedev initiated the review system against Jack Draper.

The British player conceded it was a tough situation for the official, but believed his opponent had "played the rules effectively."

Official Aurelie Tourte watched a replay and ruled Draper was responsible for interference, awarding the rally to Medvedev.

Broader Adoption

This technology aren't exclusive to Grand Slams. It was adopted at the American major since 2023 and the Aussie Open since 2025.

Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by next season the men's ATP Tour will have the system in place at all of its events.

Other Changes

A further innovation at The Championships 2025 involves the introduction of visual indicators on displays to complement the verbal announcements from the electronic line calling system.

This addresses instances where spectators have occasionally been uncertain whether a ball was out or in.

In other news, with exactly 100 days remaining until the start of the tournament, organizers have further announced an increase in daily attendance at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
