Vince Gilligan Shares He Has a Plan for How His Sci-Fi Series Will End... Currently.
Vince Gilligan could not have predicted that Pluribus would emerge as a cultural phenomenon. “God bless the fans,” he remarks. “It was unexpected the show being as passionately debated as it is, and it makes me thrilled beyond words.”
As the debut season of the popular program reaching its finale—and Season 2 already in development—the creative team opened up about the audience reaction and whether it will impact the narrative path of Pluribus.
About the Incredible Fan Response
It would be easy to get sidetracked by the constant speculation and audience predictions surrounding Pluribus. He is making a conscious effort to steer clear of all that.
“It feels like an endless supply of hot fudge sundaes and being tickled to death,” he describes. “It's the greatest thing, but I get wind of it through word of mouth, and that's on purpose. I have never looked myself up on the internet, nor do I ever want to. It's not a lack of interest. It's a bottomless pit I know I would fall into and then I'd be living in squalor from the hardware store and I'd never leave my living room.”
Despite trying to stay away, there’s no escaping the overwhelmingly positive response to the series. The only approach for the writers is to take it in stride and try not to let it dictate the story of the show.
“We make no attempt to adjust our writing,” says Alison Tatlock. “The narrative we craft is not influenced by what people are saying.”
“We prefer to keep our noses to the grindstone,” Gilligan concludes.
A Pressing Query: Will the creator Have a Plan for the Finale of Pluribus?
So if the writers aren’t being guided by public opinion, can we assume they already know how Pluribus will reach its endpoint? In short yes… sort of.
“We have some potential directions about the ultimate destination,” Gilligan reveals. “however, we remain prepared to abandon a good idea for a more brilliant plan. This approach has served us in good stead on Better Call Saul and on Breaking Bad even before that. We scrap ideas when we conceive of something superior and I expect we'll continue doing that.”
On the other hand, if plans fall through, executive producer Gordon Smith has a pretty funny idea to use as a backup.
“My recurring proposal is that the entire story is inside a snow globe, and that we'll reveal the snow globe and the characters are inside it,” Smith jokes, “though the idea hasn't gained traction.”
Then again, why not reference the iconic TV endings?
“I want Carol to wake up in bed next to Bob Newhart,” Gilligan says with a smile.
Pluribus is streaming now on Apple TV.
