Both ships named Friendship and Tigger Moth departed Quintana Roo on 20 March.

A large-scale rescue and recovery operation is currently in progress in the Caribbean region for a pair of lost boats transporting aid cargo traveling from Mexico to Havana.

Naval Rescue Operations Deployed

Authorities in Mexico has dispatched naval assets and reconnaissance aircraft to find the Friendship and Tigger Moth, which were carrying a minimum of nine total crew members, as stated by a official statement.

The ships had been scheduled to make landfall in Cuba's capital on either Tuesday or Wednesday, but there has been radio silence from them and no confirmation of their docking, the navy said.

Background of Relief to the Island

The island nation has leaned on aid convoys from Mexico over the past few weeks, as the country grapples with repeated nationwide blackouts.

"The crews and captains are seasoned mariners, and both vessels are outfitted with proper navigational gear and emergency beacons," an official associated with the mission stated.

The nine individuals on board are citizens of the United States, Cuba, France, and Poland. Officials said it has been in touch with maritime rescue coordination centres from those nations along with their diplomatic representatives.

"We are working closely with the officials and remain confident in the capability of the sailors to safely arrive in Havana," the statement continued.

Previous Humanitarian Shipment

Earlier in the week, the government in Havana widely celebrated and officially received a separate vessel that had delivered a significant amount of humanitarian aid to the country.

That ship, nicknamed "a modern Granma" after the vessel in which Fidel Castro landed in Cuba to start the armed struggle in the 1950s, delivered photovoltaic panels, drugs, baby formula, bicycles and food.

Broader Geopolitical Climate

Volunteers and NGOs have largely spearheaded initiatives to bring humanitarian aid to Cuba since January, a period which saw a oil sanctions on the Communist-run nation began.

Global bodies have since highlighted "dire" lack of essential goods, with more than 50k surgeries called off in Cuba due to electricity supply constraints.

Diplomatic pressure have increased in recent months, with comments from different representatives emphasizing the complex situation regarding bilateral relations.

In response to previous statements, a prominent government figure stated firmly that "the governance model of Cuba is not subject to discussion."

Indications suggest that preliminary steps of discussions commenced, although their ongoing development remains unclear.

The Mexican navy said it was committed to using all of the resources at its reach to locate the boats and ensure the safety of the crews.

At this time, there has been silence on the lost ships by the Cuban government.
