This Swine Life: Hog Named 6-7 Granted Clemency by Miami Dade County Mayor.
While perhaps not at the equivalent scale as granting clemency to Thanksgiving turkeys, but the Miami-Dade County mayor had her own ceremonial pardon event this week by ceremoniously saving the life of a swine named Six Seven.
Daniella Levine Cava carried out the annual tradition at the Cuban-themed Latin Cafe 2000 in the center of Miami’s iconic Little Havana neighborhood.
“This animal is guiltless. She is worthy of this pardon. She has committed zero crimes,” stated the mayor in a speech with obvious nods to the extraordinary and sizable number of pardons issued from the start of the beginning of a new presidential term.
“Except perhaps for eating six or seven apples per day,” she went on. “May this pig enjoy a prosperous future without fear.”
The gathering, simultaneously observing and challenging the region’s Hispanic tradition of feasting on pork during the holidays, was created to emulate the traditional fowl clemency at the White House.
The swine, provided by a first responder, was christened after the popular vernacular phrase of young people exclaiming “six seven” – deriving from a hip-hop line – often seemingly at random. The craze became so widespread that a leading lexicon site recently named “six-seven” its top term for the year.
A New Life
Six Seven the pig is now scheduled to spend its days at a rural sanctuary “far from charcoal and roasting pans”, according to the organizers' announcement.
“This swine clemency has become a beloved tradition to begin the end-of-year celebrations,” said the cafe owner, in a particularly upbeat message.
“It embodies the spirit of Miami: happy, varied, and grounded in customs that foster togetherness. Annually, we are delighted to mark culture and compassion in a way only Miami can.”
Participants enjoyed a plant-based fare of spinach fritters and cafecito as they marked the swine's new lease on life.
