The Red Devils Set to Secure Germany Forward Lea Schüller away from the Bavarian Giants
The Women's Super League club are on the verge of completing the signing for prolific German forward Lea Schüller on a permanent transfer from Bayern Munich.
A Marquee Acquisition for United
The forward, with half a year remaining on her contract, is known as a prolific goalscorer for both club and country. She has scored more than 100 goals for Bayern and scored 54 times in 82 caps for her country. Her arrival is viewed as a marquee coup for the WSL side.
Departure from Bayern was expected after she was seen holding back emotions while applauding the club's fans after a victory over Bayer Leverkusen this month.
Reports in December that the Frauen-Bundesliga was set to lose one of its top forwards. According to reports, the formalities for the move are now finalised.
Consistent Goalscoring to Boost United's Forward Line
The experienced striker's arrival should represent a major uplift to the team's forward line. She has been highly reliable in front of goal in the Bundesliga.
- For seven straight seasons, including the last term, she achieved at least a double-figures tally of league goals.
- She claimed the top scorer award in 2021-22 season with a haul of 16 goals.
Building Steam at Old Trafford
Securing Schüller’s signature comes at a time when United appear to be building positive momentum.
Recent performances feature securing a place in the Champions League knockout phase playoffs in a seeded position and a win in the Conti Cup quarter-finals.
Off the pitch, the mid-season window has brought further business:
- The acquisition of Swedish defender Hanna Lundkvist on a multi-year deal.
- The new deal for Japan midfielder Hinata Miyazawa, who has become popular figure since joining in 2023.
On Miyazawa’s extension, a senior figure stated: “Miyazawa is now a critical part to the way we play. Her footballing intelligence and technical ability allows her and the team to dominate play from the middle of the park.”
The new defender, having joined from a club in the American league, said: “You can sense how much they [United] have progressed in the last few years, competing in one of the strongest leagues in the world and performing in the top European competition.”
