The New Animated Series' Opening Sequence Chose the Wrong Critical Role Song

The Mighty Nein, the newest animated series by the beloved role-playing group, revealed a new introductory sequence. It features our favorite cast of misfits, misfits, and criminals kicking ass and making their mark, while also hinting at multiple heart-wrenching backstories for key figures including Liam O'Brien's mage Caleb, and Travis Willingham's orc warlock, the character Fjord.

All in all, the opening appears stunning. However, I felt that an element was lost in the music selection.

This sequence employs "Welcome to the Continent", an exceptional song created by artist Colm McGuinness. It's a track originating from the soundtrack album of the same name, the second release put out by the production company's record label Scanlan Shorthalt Music. It's a wonderful nostalgic choice, and I suspect that fans of the second campaign will love its inclusion.

Personally, The Mighty Nein's opening fails to capture the hype and excitement that was part of the second campaign's live-play sessions. "It's Your Turn", composed by musician Jason Charles Miller, was an instant classic in my view when it was first revealed in that year, and it improved further when co-founder Sam Riegel added lyrics to the tune for the animated Campaign 2 opening in the later year.

Featuring vocals from one actress, another performer, a co-star, as well as the writer, the song was catchy and fun. At the time, I hadn't even watched the follow-up series at that point, but this was such an earworm that I kept it on my device. It's a song that excites you before you start an installment of fantasy hijinks.

The Mighty Nein's intro with "Welcome to Wildemount" doesn't strike the right notes in my opinion. It's a grand composition, but from what I know of the group, I can't help but feel that its tone is a little off.

Of course, the creators has stated that the series will have some surprises and differences from the actual-play campaign. An adjusted mood for its opening seems to be one of them.

This animated adventure will be available to watch on the streaming service from November 19. For those eager before that, or want a head start to learn about the personas of the second series, the actual play are accessible on the audio platform and YouTube.
