The Golden State is Completely Free of Drought for the First Time in 25 Years.

For the first time in 25 years, no portion of California is facing drought conditions. This landmark event follows challenging years marked by below-average rain that exacerbated blaze threats and strained its huge agribusiness.

A Map Reveals No Drought

A recent update from the U.S. Drought Monitor illustrated that all of California is clear of any level of drought. This shift was driven by a period of significant storms that helped fill major reservoirs like Shasta and Oroville far beyond their historic averages.

“To those aged 25 and below you’ve only known in a world where California has been in or emerging from drought,” remarked a weather expert.

From Intense Storms to Wet Holidays

The journey here included severe and lethal winter storms that pummeled the state in 2023, causing widespread flooding, electrical failures, and deaths. While those storms helped ease the drought, they weren't enough to erase it completely.

Even into late December, pockets like northeastern California were still classified as abnormally dry. Subsequent downpours at the start of the new year finally erased those remaining dry spots.

Essential Mountain Snowfall Remains a Concern

But, authorities caution that being out of drought does not mean complete water security. Latest data of the mountain snow accumulation show it at only about 70% of the historical norm.

This snowpack, which provides about a third of the state's water supply as it melts in the spring, is a key piece for the year ahead. Hydrology managers have emphasized that it is too early to draw conclusions for the coming year.

“The trend we’re looking at right now is more rain than snow,” said a state water resources manager. “We’d like to see the snow accumulation to increase by April 1st so that we’re nearer to normal.”

Although the monitor is entirely green, the focus now shifts to preserving this hard-won hydrological health during the coming seasons.
