Southern California Experiences Record-Breaking Heat Just One Week After Severe Winter Weather.
After enduring heavy downpours that resulted in floodwaters across sections of the city, the City of Angels is now confronting abnormally warm temperatures for the end of February.
Record-Shattering Temperatures
On Friday midday, the mercury soared to 33 degrees Celsius (91 Fahrenheit) in central LA, per data from meteorologists. This exceeds the old record for this date, which was 31 degrees Celsius (88 Fahrenheit) and was recorded in the previous year.
"Exceptionally warm weather" were highlighted on official graphics for the region.
Safety Alerts
Authorities stated that Friday's conditions posed an "increased danger for heat illness" for vulnerable populations. Their guidance included:
- Drinking plenty of fluids.
- Limiting outdoor activities during the afternoon hours of the day.
- Not leaving children or pets unattended in a parked vehicle.
A Dramatic Weather Swing
This sharp rise in mercury arrives just after a powerful storm system that battered the region earlier in the week. That storm unleashed heavy snow, strong winds, and thunderstorms to mountainous regions, leading to evacuation orders for millions residents.
Sadly, the conditions also caused a deadly avalanche in the Tahoe area, which resulted in nine fatalities.
Weekend Outlook
The outlook suggests a cooldown will arrive. Readings were predicted to fall to around sixty-one degrees Fahrenheit in downtown LA by Friday night.
Other locales that experienced ninety degrees included Long Beach, Burbank, and Woodland Hills. Elsewhere, Santa Maria, Oxnard, Camarillo, and Westwood were forecast to reach the high 80s.
In the coming days, downtown Los Angeles can see temperatures in the eighties, with a further cooldown likely for the week ahead.
