Shoaib Bashir Makes Unexpected Inclusion in English Ashes Team
England have opted for a 12-man squad just two days before the first Ashes Test, with Shoaib Bashir earning a surprise place.
The 22-year-old’s selection suggests that the visiting team will wait until the morning of the initial match to decide whether Perth Stadium pitch favor four seamers or the inclusion of a spinner.
Both pace bowlers are part of the selected squad, showing there are no doubts about either pace bowler’s condition.
Gus Atkinson and Brydon Carse round out the attack, with the latter most likely to miss out if Bashir enters the final team.
Ground Conditions Favor Seamers
Brendon McCullum had been anticipated to opt for an all-seam attack on a ground that has staged five past matches.
In those games, the majority of dismissals have been taken by pace bowling, with only 40 to spin bowling.
Among these spin dismissals, Australia’s Nathan Lyon has claimed the bulk, while overseas slow bowlers together have just a handful.
On a ground known for its speed and carry, and whose groundsman, Isaac McDonald, pledged that these traits are “a mainstay and not going to change,” a side loaded with seamers remains the probable choice.
Alternative Choices Weighed
There had been speculation that the all-rounder could be brought into the side to provide some slow bowling while also bolstering the lower order.
However McCullum has chosen to stick with Bashir, having said earlier this year that he would be his preferred slow bowler for the Ashes.
In July, Lyon commented on Bashir as “OK,” saying that “in my eyes, Jack Leach is still England’s top slow bowler.”
“It is a massive role, and it can be a significant test for people who lack experience in the past in Australian pitches,” Lyon said of spin bowling in matches Down Under.
“I won't reveal my strategies so they perform and excel out here.”
