An extensive manufacturing zone situated in the suburbs of Jakarta is dealing with radioactive contamination after a government team detected traces of the dangerous element Caesium-137 at 22 manufacturing plants inside the area, which encompasses companies shipping chilled marine products.

Emergency Measures and Product Recall

The finding has led to immediate cleanup efforts and the moving of local inhabitants, coming after a comparable pollution scare in the United States that was traced back to the Indonesian facilities.

Investigation and Detection of Contamination

The country's authorities initiated an investigation when the US Food and Drug Administration detected Caesium-137, a radioactive isotope, in a consignment of chilled breaded prawns exported by a local company.

Officials issued an advisory instructing distributors and retailers to dispose of the product and avoid selling it, although the found amount was far below the agency's action limit. It added that the quantity of Caesium-137 it had detected would not pose an immediate risk to the public.

The FDA stated: “The main impact on health of concern after extended, repeated low dose exposure (for example through eating of polluted food or water over time) is an increased risk of cancer, caused by damage to DNA within living cells.”

Extensive Contamination and Medical Checks

Radiation scans showed at least 22 plants in the industrial area were affected. The Indonesian taskforce did not identify the 21 other production sites, but said they would immediately receive decontamination processes carried out by the country's atomic energy authority.

The environment minister declared that people living in highly polluted zones would be relocated until the site was cleaned, adding that the safety of the residents was the “top priority”.

Health officials additionally performed checks on nearby employees and residents located near the manufacturing zone, identifying 9 individuals who showed signs for exposure to Caesium-137. These individuals were sent to a hospital before being allowed to go back.

Decontamination and Containment Measures

Regarding Caesium-137 and Health Concerns

Caesium-137 is a dangerous nuclear element that usually enters the environment as a result of atomic testing or incidents, such as the Fukushima disaster or Chernobyl. Trace quantities are found in soil, food and air.

The amount detected in the frozen shrimp was far lower than FDA action levels, but the authority explained long-term exposure to even low doses of the element was linked to an elevated risk of the disease.

The recalled shrimp was available at large store outlets across at least a dozen American states, such as Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Missouri, Mississippi, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Texas and West Virginia.
