NY Introduces Reporting Tool for Residents to Report ICE Videos Following Arrests of 4 American Citizens

New York state AG has launched a fresh digital platform asking residents to share photos and videos of federal immigration enforcement across New York. This move follows a shortly after a high-profile immigration operation disrupted Manhattan's Chinatown, prompting mass outcry.

American Citizens Held In Enforcement Action

A congressional representative revealed during a Wednesday press conference that four US citizens were arrested and detained for "almost a full day" after the previous day's operation. Protests occurred in New York on both Tuesday and Wednesday.

"Every New Yorker is entitled to reside free from terror," the attorney general wrote in a statement.

"For those who saw and recorded federal operations recently, I ask you to provide that evidence with the authorities. We are committed to assessing these accounts and investigating any wrongdoings."

Portal Features

The platform includes options to submit visual evidence of the raid, plus a section to specify location information. Prior to sending, individuals must mark a checkbox that states that "the office could utilize any materials, images, or footage in a legal proceeding, such as in a legal proceeding or public report."

Information about the ICE Action

The Manhattan operation, which witnesses say included dozens of federal agents, happened in a popular area of the city where counterfeit products and other goods are sold daily widely – frequently to sightseers.

Footage of Tuesday's raid depict several masked and armed federal agents zip-tying and detaining a man, and pushing back bystanders. Masses of locals pursued the officers down the sidewalks. An armored truck was also seen rolling through the Manhattan avenues.

Official Reactions

At a news conference held with the immigrant advocacy group, the congressman, a lawmaker, said that four nationals were detained by ICE for about 24 hours and that there were "no circumstances where four American citizens should be taken for no reason." He clarified the citizens were let go on Wednesday with no accusations made.

"The intent is obvious here. It is not focused on deporting lawbreakers," Goldman remarked. "This is a militarized effort to create conflict. It is simply a pretext to incite violence for federal officials to deploy the armed forces to stop violence that they initiated."

Widespread Condemnation

Anger over the immigration operation quickly spread – all three mayoral candidates criticized the incident, along with the state leader.

"Repeatedly, the Trump administration opts for heavy-handed tactics that generate terror, instead of protection. It must stop," a contender stated.

The city's immigrant rights groups expressed outrage too.

"Federal officers raided the neighborhood with tactical trucks, covered personnel and protective equipment to focus on small merchants trying to make a living. This operation had no relation to community security and was entirely about terrorizing immigrant families and areas," stated the head of a major immigrant coalition.

Official Guidelines

Agency rules forbids the holding of citizens and the organization has claimed it does not apprehend US citizens. Yet, investigative journalism has discovered that over 170 US citizens have been detained unlawfully by federal agents since the beginning of the current administration.

Current Situation

ICE raids have been becoming more common in New York and nationwide this year.

A mid-October raid in midtown Manhattan was the first known raid on an refuge facility of the present government. Protests against immigration enforcement are commonplace along with accusations of violence and abusive practices.

Latest, a submission provided by advocacy organizations alleged inadequate care of expectant mothers in ICE facilities.
