Nicolas Sarkozy Set to Write Jail Diary Chronicling Two Dozen Days Behind Bars

Nicolas Sarkozy will soon publish a personal account in the coming weeks named Notes from a Cell, detailing his time endured in jail.

The revelation came shortly after Sarkozy was released while his appeal proceeds the guilty verdict for criminal conspiracy in a case to secure election campaign funds from the government of the late Libyan dictator.

Prison Experience: Inner Thoughts

“In prison visibility is limited, and activities are scarce,” he notes in a preview, suggesting the account is more about his thoughts during solitary confinement instead of extensive analysis regarding the strained and troubled correctional facilities in the country.

“Silence escapes me, not present at the prison, where there is a lot to hear,” he continues. “The noise unfortunately never stops. However, akin to empty spaces, one’s inner world is fortified in prison.”

Release Hearing: Sharing the Struggle

During his plea for freedom, Sarkozy was present by video link from his cell, characterizing his incarceration as gruelling. He had told the court: “I must acknowledge those working in the jail, who are exceptionally humane, easing this ordeal tolerable – as it truly is one.”

“I didn’t expect at this stage of life, I’d be in prison. It’s an ordeal forced upon me. I confess it’s hard, it’s very hard. It leaves a mark every inmate as it’s exhausting.”

First of Its Kind

Sarkozy, the ex-head of state between 2007 and 2012, was the first ex-leader of an EU country and the first leader since WWII of France to serve time in prison.

Prior to imprisonment he had said he would use his time for authoring a memoir.

Books in Prison

Unconfirmed is did he manage to go through the texts he took into prison: a life story of Jesus spanning two books plus the novel by Dumas the famous story, a plot where a blameless person ends up incarcerated but escapes to seek vengeance.

Prison Conditions

The former leader was placed in solitary confinement for his own security in a space approximately nine square meters featuring a personal bathroom at the correctional facility located in the capital. Two bodyguards occupied the next cell.

Reports indicated that he consumed just yogurt while inside because he feared prison cuisine might have been spat on. Although he had access for self-catering but refused this, as per accounts. It is uncertain whether Sarkozy will write about his dietary choices.

Defense Viewpoint

Sarkozy’s lawyer, who saw him regularly each day during the incarceration, told the release hearing security would be better released rather than in custody. “He has faced death threats, listened to yells at night plus rapid actions next door as a detainee harmed themselves.”

Case Background

Sarkozy went to prison in late October when the judiciary sentenced him to five years in prison for illegal collaboration related to a plan to obtain election financing during his election campaign.

He disputes the charges and is contesting the ruling, and a fresh trial is scheduled for early next year.
