Meteorologists are saying a frosty commencement to the new year, with snowfall expected throughout a lot of the UK. Celebrants are advised to wrap up as bitterly cold temperatures are expected for New Year's Eve.

Celebratory Celebrations Continue In Spite of Alerts

The Scottish capital's famous Hogmanay celebrations are planned to go ahead, a contrast to last year's cancellation. This is in spite of weather alerts for snow in northern Scotland.

"An icy New Year's Eve evening for those partying, so extra layers will be essential," noted the national forecaster.

Fireworks Under Open but Chilly Skies

Across the UK, the weather is likely to be perfect for fireworks shows, with no rain and open skies. The mercury are due to be cold, making additional clothing a necessity, as per forecasters.

To the north, skies will be cloudier, but this is not anticipated to impact visibility for watching fireworks. "It won't be low cloud, mist or murk, so you will likely be able to see fireworks, just not stars," added one forecaster.

Widespread Snow Warnings for New Year's Day

As we enter Friday, weather warnings are in place across Northern Ireland and stretching from Wales, over the north-west, the West Midlands and through to London and most of the south-east of England.

• Commuting is likely to be disrupted.
• The public have been urged to allow extra time for trips on the road.
• Disruptions and cancellations are expected on the transport network.

Temperatures Set to Plummet Even More

With the start of 2026, it will be "chilly no matter where you are," said forecaster Simon Partridge. Temperatures are forecast to drop further as snow and gale-force winds are predicted to batter the north of the country.

Approximately 10cm of snow is forecast to have built up in some areas by Friday morning, with up to 30cm on the highest roads and hills.

Public Health Warnings Issued

In addition, amber-level health advisories are in force for the north-east and north-west of England. These are due to remain in place until noon on 5 January, with readings forecast to fall to between 3C and 5C.

Officials said this indicated the weather was expected to lead to significant impacts across health and social care services. This encompasses a likely increase in the mortality rate among vulnerable individuals or those 65 and older.

The advice for all is clear: to see the new year in security, dressing for the cold is absolutely key.
