Jets Head Coach Glenn Confident Kris Boyd Will Recover Fully After New York City Shooting

Jets head coach Aaron Glenn mentioned that he has been in contact with cornerback Kris Boyd and believes the player will recover well after being shot in midtown Manhattan in the early hours of Sunday.

Glenn described that Boyd, who is hospitalized, was “positive” during their recent conversation.

“That’s what eases my mind, is that he’s in good spirits,” Glenn said Wednesday. “His wife and child, they are doing well and he is expected to recover fully.”

It remained unclear when Boyd might be released the hospital, where he has been listed as serious yet stable.

“Still unsure,” Glenn remarked. “Yet I must mention, from our conversation, he seemed very positive. And again, that’s what gives me comfort, that he feels like that and he’s talking that way.”

New York police shared security footage Monday of an individual wanted in the shooting of Boyd. The reason behind the incident is still being looked into and officials stated it remains uncertain if Boyd was the intended victim. There were no additional victims as confirmed by officials.

The shooting happened around 2 a.m. on Sunday morning about halfway between Madison Square Garden and the bustling tourist spot. Boyd, in his late twenties, was transported to a local hospital after sustaining an abdominal gunshot wound, police said. The assailant escaped.

Glenn mentioned Boyd has been on his mind “a great deal” since he heard about the shooting. He further stated that Boyd and his spouse just had a baby.

“The first thing I thought about, he has a new baby,” Glenn said. “I thought of his spouse, considering his child and I want to make sure that he’s OK. And that’s the only thing that really went through my mind.
“There’s a process to this, which I won’t get into, but It is reassuring that he will recover excellently.”

Boyd was inactive this season, after joining the team, after being placed on injured reserve on 18 August with a shoulder injury that involved surgical repair.

He signed with New York as an unrestricted free agent in spring and was projected as an important component of an improved special teams group under the coach and special teams coordinator the special teams coach. However, he got hurt during a practice session on early August and had to be helped off.

Boyd has remained around the team during the entire campaign while recovering from the shoulder injury.

“He’s been a part of what we’re doing,” Glenn stated. “In fact, he comes to the games all the time. He is completely involved. Given his status as a special teams standout, he has been instrumental in guiding others.”

Boyd, hailing from the Lone Star State, began his career with the Vikings after being a seventh-round pick by Minnesota out of UT in the 2019 draft. He signed with the Arizona Cardinals in 2023 and later was with the Texans after that. Boyd inked a single-season agreement worth $1.6m with the Jets in the spring.
