Israeli citizens commemorate two-year remembrance of October 7th incident as Palestinian peace negotiations proceed
Citizens have assembled around the country to remember 24 months since the Hamas-initiated assault on 7 October 2023, as negotiations advanced in the neighboring country over an end to the war in Gaza.
The incident resulted in more than 1,200 people losing their lives and 251 others taken back to Gaza as prisoners. It was the most most lethal day for Jewish people since the Holocaust.
Israel answered by beginning a defensive operation in Gaza which has killed over 67,000 people, according to the territory's Hamas-controlled health ministry. Its figures are regarded as accurate by the United Nations and other global organizations.
"The violent opponents have caused great damage, but they have not overcome us," the leader remarked on Tuesday.
He also vowed to "accomplish all the aims of the war: the release of all the captured, the removal of the Hamas regime and the promise that Gaza will never again pose a danger to Israel".
Commemorative Events Across Israel
The national leadership postponed state remembrance events until mid-October - after the conclusion of the religious holiday season - but gatherings still occurred throughout the country on Tuesday.
A commemorative event for the loved ones of people who died in the Hamas incident was organized in the coastal city. Put together by the families themselves, it was televised across Israeli TV networks.
A period earlier, a silent tribute was held around the country.
Negotiation Talks in Egypt
Meanwhile, the conflicting parties' negotiating teams convened in the North African tourist destination of Sharm el-Sheikh for a continuing round of indirect talks to discuss the conditions of the agreement.
A senior delegate involved in the discussions revealed that an evening round of indirect talks started at 19:00 Cairo time.
The official stated the earlier meeting concluded without concrete outcomes, amid disagreements over the recommended Israeli withdrawal maps from Gaza and over guarantees Hamas wants to ensure Israel does not restart combat after the initial stage of the deal.
He commented that the discussions are "challenging and have not yet achieve any real breakthrough," but noted that facilitators are working hard to reduce the gaps between the two sides.
Essential Points in Negotiations
- A permanent truce
- The trade of the prisoners still kept by Hamas for detainees from Gaza
- The removal of military personnel from Gaza
- Arrangements for humanitarian aid provision
- Post-war governance of the area
Public Reaction
In Tel Aviv's memorial area previously, 29-year-old Hagar - whose brother lived through the assault on the gathering, where many attendees were lost their lives and many more were taken hostage by Hamas gunmen - shared: "Nowhere feels like home now and until every captive come back not a single person will feel safe."
"When we see all home once more, we can breathe once more. Then we can start to heal," she continued.
In front of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's official dwelling in Jerusalem, people assembled to express their solidarity for the loved ones of the abducted. Israel states forty-eight continue in captivity in Gaza, 20 of whom are thought to be living.
Demonstrator Atalia Regev remarked: "We must do every compromise required for the captives to return. But we really want promises that we will be protected."
Surveys now regularly indicate that approximately the majority of Israeli citizens want the war to finish in as payment for the release of the hostages.
Gaza Conditions
At the site of Nova festival, grieving people gathered to remember the victims.
From there, the sound of Israeli air strikes and artillery could be detected just a brief space away in Gaza, where observers said the heavy Israeli shelling persisted.
In Gaza City, air and artillery strikes were noted in the early hours of that day in the west side Tal al-Hawa, area and zone districts and in the eastern neighbourhood of Sheikh Radwan, as well the settlement to the northwestern area.
"As the night arrives, the anxiety arrives with it," relocated urban resident a mother, whose 17-year-old son was lost his life by an Israeli aerial attack previously, described.
"We are terrified of the attacks. During nighttime we are lying together, holding each other, particularly my little child who rests his head on me the entire evening."
"Every second we monitor the updates to see the situation. And I'm afraid that this truce will not be finalized and that the fighting will come back to us."
Humanitarian Emergency
The healthcare center in the urban area said it had accepted the remains of half dozen people by the daytime, including three who died in an Israeli strike in the south part area.
A different healthcare center in the south region of Khan Younis reported another two dead people had been delivered. A person was lost his life by Israeli soldiers while seeking aid to the southern area, medics stated.
