Gareth Southgate has made clear that he is not seeking a re-entry into football management, noting that it would be difficult to recreate the higher calling he felt as England’s manager.

He suggested his aim to dedicate his efforts toward supporting the youth and countering what he described as a widespread pessimistic outlook now prevalent in the country.

Pursuing Different Paths Away from Coaching

In a recent radio interview, Southgate was prompted regarding talk linking him with available jobs in the English football and abroad.

“My role with England was not just a job—it was a mission representing my nation,” he answered. “That’s going to be very hard to replicate. Having had 37 years in football I’m enjoying finding other areas where I think I might be able to make a difference.”

A Passion for Mentorship

Leading up to the publication of his new title, Dear England: Lessons in Leadership, Southgate emphasized that he is highly enthusiastic about offering guidance for young people, utilizing lessons from his period as England’s men’s football manager from 2016 and 2024, as well as his experiences as a parent.

Southgate believes that his journey managing the squad, during which the team evolved from being deeply unpopular to widely supported, holds broader applications.

“At the beginning, there was a major gap between the team and the fans,” he said. “People saw us as high-ego players but we were able to turn that around. I saw the power that the team had to bring people together of every community.”

Family Life and Shaping the Next Generation

Reflecting on his role as a parent, the coach commented: “Parents strive to offer their children a great beginning, but eventually, kids tune out. My household is no different, but I’m convinced this is a vital focus for society.”

He continued: “Currently, a pessimistic story dominates national discourse, and we must offer youth optimism and direction. The country is full of potential, but young individuals require positive influences and supportive peers, as these choices shape their futures profoundly.”

Common Ground Above Division

He asserted that “the British people share more commonalities than differences” but that the societal attention often centers on conflict.

“The reasons for public dissatisfaction are clear,” he stated. “Financial struggles affect numerous communities, fueling calls for transformation. Yet, I’ve observed the capacity to bring the nation together. During the pandemic, I witnessed neighbors helping each other—that’s when the UK excels, demonstrating strength and unity in adversity.”

His forthcoming book, the book Dear England, is scheduled to present deeper reflections on leadership and public spirit drawn from his distinguished time in football.
