We are analyzing images and video posted this morning that show the aftermath of a reported car bomb explosion that authorities in Russia say killed a senior military officer in Moscow.
Russian authorities confirmed that Lt Gen Fanil Sarvarov was in the car that detonated and that he later died to his injuries. A probe is under way.
The initial step to check the site from which the images originated relied on posts indicating the blast happened on Yasenevaya Street in the southern district of the capital city of Russia.
We used panoramic mapping services on digital map platforms and the Russian search engine Yandex Maps to match the distinctive yellow colour of a adjacent apartment building captured in the video.
Identifying other structures, streetlights and the road configuration confirmed the exact location the pictures were captured.
We also checked that the video clips were new and that the images had not undergone manipulated.
