Ben & Jerry's Founding Partner States Unilever Halted Pro-Palestinian Frozen Dessert Product
The original creators behind the famous frozen dessert company Ben & Jerry's has stated how corporate owner the multinational conglomerate blocked the introduction of a new Palestine-themed frozen dessert product.
The entrepreneur, who established the company with his partner, announced how he will independently develop this new flavor within a personal series highlighting causes Ben & Jerry's has been barred from addressing publicly.
Ongoing Dispute Involving Creators and Corporate Owner
This latest development intensifies the ongoing conflict among the internationally recognized ice cream maker and its corporate parent, the British packaged goods corporation which has owned the ice cream brand for over two decades.
The co-founders have asserted that the parent company along with its ice cream arm Magnum improperly prevented Ben & Jerry's from "honouring its social mission".
The Fruit Sorbet becoming an Emblem for Solidarity
The entrepreneur announced through an Instagram video that he's developing a new watermelon-flavored sorbet, requesting public suggestions regarding the product's name plus potential ingredients.
“I'm accomplishing what they were prevented from doing,” Mr. Cohen stated in his kitchen. “I'm creating a watermelon-flavored frozen dessert that calls for lasting ceasefire in Palestine while demanding addressing the harm that was done there.”
The watermelon has emerged as an emblem for support for the Palestinian people due to its colors, which closely resemble those of the Palestinian flag – the distinctive four-color pattern.
Historical Social Engagement and Recent Developments
Several years ago, the ice cream company ceased sales of its products in areas under Israeli control, leading to Unilever transferring the Israeli operation over to an Israeli distributor, thus allowing continued sales in disputed territories.
The new dessert series will be developed under Mr. Cohen's personal brand, the activist ice cream brand that originally established several years back to support ex- political contender Senator Sanders via the product "Bernie's Return".
Management Changes and Upcoming Plans
The founder revealed that he plans to create additional frozen dessert varieties focusing on issues that the company was prevented from speaking about openly by Unilever.
This development follows partner Jerry Greenfield stepped down his position at the company in September, following many years of involvement, citing concerns that the company's autonomy had been compromised following corporate moves to curb their advocacy work.
Previously, Ben Cohen stated that "Jerry has a really big heart and this conflict with our parent company was breaking it."
"My heart compels me to keep working inside the company to advocate for corporate autonomy so that the company can actualise the social mission, the principles which established its foundation while upholding for decades," he told media outlets.
